The Vocational Training Center (VTC) was established on 14 October 1975 under the Department of Electricity to train a large number of workers required for the growing industrial and economic activities of the nation. VTC, which was under the Ministry of Education since 9 May 1982, was transferred to the Ministry of Planning, Human Resources and Environment on 11 November 1993. When the higher education system was established on 1 October 1998, on 1 January 1999, VTC came under the Maldives College of Higher Education (MCHE) and changed to Maldives Institute of Technical Education (MIT). On 1 February 2001, became the Faculty of Engineering Technology (FET). In 2010, FET branched out and an institute called Maldives Polytechnic was established to offer courses below the undergraduate programs. FET’s new academic structure included of civil engineering, architecture, electrical electronics and mechanical engineering. On 23 January 2011, FET's Bachelor of Architectural Design course started. On 19 June 2011, Electrical and Electronics courses started at Kulhudhufushi and Hithadhu campuses. The faculty expanded its teaching further and in August 2013, and science was added to the name along with science subjects.

FEST was formed by merging two highly regarded institutions – the Faculty of Science (formed on 3rd August 2013) and the Faculty of Engineering Technology (formed as Vocational Training Center on 14th October 1975) on 1st January 2018.
