School of Nursing

After many short informal courses were run by the government to help and build people to care for the sick, in 1963, with the help of WHO, a three-month course was started to teach nursing with a properly written curriculum. The Allied Health Services Training Center was established in 1973 as a special center for nursing education. The center was under the Ministry of Health. In 1991, Allied Health expanded the training offered and the center was renamed the Institute of Health Sciences (IHS) and the first nursing diploma in the country was launched. With the establishment of Maldives Higher Education (MCHE) on 1 October 1998, the custody of IHS changed to MCHE and the name of the center was changed to Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS). With the establishment of MCHE campuses in the north and south of the country, FHS expanded its nursing training. In 2002, Advanced Certificate in Nursing training started at Kulhudhufushi and Hithadu campuses. In 2004, training started at Thohdhoo Campus. With the start of training at the L. Gan campus in 2013, nursing studies expanded further and the opportunities offered increased. The first undergraduate program launched in 2011 was the first Nursing degree program in the country and the Masters in Nursing program launched in 2013 became another program that entered the history of nursing. In 2017, a separate center for nursing education was established and named the School of Nursing.
