Overview
Designed to address a vital national skill gap and meet the growing interest in safeguarding the nation’s heritage, the Doctor of Philosophy in Maldivian Culture and History at The Maldives National University provides master’s graduates with an advanced, interdisciplinary pathway for independent, original research. Supported by local and international supervisory expertise, the program equips candidates with advanced theoretical and methodological skills to systematically analyze archival materials, oral traditions, and material culture. By fostering critical thinking, creative problem-solving, and high-level scholarly publishing, this PhD program aims to cultivate independent researchers who will deepen the understanding of the Maldives' unique socio-political evolution, elevate the university's research culture, and generate innovative solutions to preserve and sustain Maldivian identity and heritage. Potential prospective students may choose an area within the paradigm of Maldivian Culture and History including but not limited to : History and Historiography Language, Literature and Intellectual Traditions Culture, Identity and Society Heritage, Archaeology and Material Culture Arts, Performance and Creative Practice Maritime Culture, Island Communities and Environmental Heritage
Entry Requirements
General Entry
- Attainment of a related qualification at Level 9 (Master's degree), provided the applicant has demonstrated research potential through a substantial research project or dissertation/thesis equivalent, typically to one year of full-time study.
Language Requirements
- If the applicant's MQA Level 9 Qualification is not in English Medium, applicant should have English Language Proficiency (at least 6.5 score in IELTS or Equivalent)
General Notes
- Entry requirements are indicative. Depending on the sequence and the number of applications received, all qualifying students may not gain entry.
- Circumstances may require the University to defer or cancel some courses, especially when the minimum class size (10 for certificate & diploma courses, 15 for Degrees courses) is not achieved.
- Passes at GCE OL/SSC and HSC is considered to be grades "C" or above and passes at GCE AL is considered to be the grades "E" or above.
Fees stated above are tuition fees for local students. Fees for international students is twice the stated fees. All fees are quoted in MVR.
