Overview

In this course we teach Coastal Navigation using Radar and Visual bearings. Rule of the Road Metereorology and weather reports. Use and Basic Operations of Various Bridge Equipments compulsory to have onboard Coastal Water Voyage Vessels. Basic Stability, Cargo handling and Ship Construction

Entry Requirements

General Entry

  • i) Completion of basic education or attainment of level 2 qualification

Alternative Entry

  • i) 18 years of age AND ability to communicate in the language of instruction OR
  • ii) Hold a valid Coastal Navigation Certificate/Class V or Niyami Certificate 1 AND completed a minimum sea service of 36 months as Master or Navigating Officer on:
  • a) Vessels of 100 GRT or more OR
  • b) Vessels of 24 meters in length or more OR
  • c) Vessels carrying 12 passengers or more
  • OR
  • iii) Have approved seagoing service of not less than 36 months in the deck department of a ship of 500 GRT or more (including 6 months of bridge watchkeeping duties) OR
  • iv) Approved seagoing service of not less than one year as part of an approved training programmed, and is documented on an approved training record book

Other Requirements

  • (a) For criteria ii, iii, and iv, letter of eligibility from the MINISTRY OF TRANSPORT AND CIVIL AVIATION should be submitted along with the application form

General Notes

  • Entry requirements are indicative. Depending on the sequence and the number of applications received, all qualifying students may not gain entry.
  • Circumstances may require the University to defer or cancel some courses, especially when the minimum class size (10 for certificate & diploma courses, 15 for Degrees courses) is not achieved.
  • Passes at GCE OL/SSC and HSC is considered to be grades "C" or above and passes at GCE AL is considered to be the grades "E" or above.
