The School of Medicine is the first medical school in the country to provide the necessary education and training in the field of medicine. The school was established as a faculty of the University in 2018 and offered Doctor of Medicine (MBBS) as a course. Consultations were held with many universities to ensure that the course for training doctors is of good quality and recognized internationally. The University Council of Malaysia obtained permission to conduct the program in collaboration with the National University of Malaysia. 2 September 2018 between the Maldives National University and Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM). Under the signed agreement, the School of Medicine was also allowed to use the UKM curriculum. An agreement was signed between the Maldives National University and Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital on 23 April 2019 to operate the School of Medicine on two floors of Darumavantha Hospital and conduct the clinical subjects of the Doctor of Medicine course in collaboration with the Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital.

Life at School of Medicine
Established in October 2018, the School of Medicine (SM) at The Maldives National University stands as the sole medical school within the Maldives. Currently, the School of Medicine provides an undergraduate medical degree program, known as Doctor of Medicine (MD), which spans over a period of 5 years. The curriculum implemented for this program follows that of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), Malaysia's National University, with technical guidance provided by UKM. Prominent clinicians from reputable institutions such as Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH), ADK Hospital, Kulhudhuffushi Regional Hospital, and Senahiya Military Hospital actively participate in teaching the clinical aspects of the program. Since its inception, the School of Medicine has successfully recruited and enrolled five batches of students, with the earliest batch expected to graduate in 2024.
