Overview

Proficiency in Elementary First Aid (PEFA) is an 18-hour course and meets the requirements of STCW Regulation VI/1, Section A-VI/1, and Table A-VI/1-3 of STCW Code and is based on IMO model course 1.13 Learning outcomes On successful completion of the course, learners will acquire the knowledge, understanding and proficiency in 1. Assessment of needs of casualties and threats to own safety 2. Appreciation of body structure and functions 3. Understanding of immediate measures to be taken in cases of emergency, including the ability to: 3.1 Position casualty 3.2 Apply resuscitation techniques 3.3 Control bleeding 3.4 Apply appropriate measures of basic shock management 3.5 Apply appropriate measures in event of burns and scalds, including accidents caused by electric current 3.6 Rescue and transport a casualty 3.7 Improvise bandages and use materials in the emergency kit • Entry Criteria • Ability to communicate in the medium of instruction (English)
